Merged and Discontinued Tables for Authorised Deposit-taking Institutions Explanatory Note
From 28 May 2013, the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) commenced publishing new financial statistics on authorised deposit-taking institutions (ADIs) on its website. These data are included in a new publication, Quarterly ADI Performance. It includes a range of balance sheet and financial performance statistics for ADIs, including assets and liabilities, capital adequacy, impaired facilities, profitability, and asset performance ratios. These data are published for the ADI industry in aggregate, and for different types of ADIs – banks (major banks, other domestic banks, foreign subsidiary banks, and foreign branch banks), credit unions, and building societies. APRA also publishes balance sheet and financial performance data for mutual ADIs.
The new statistics published by APRA overlap with data that the RBA previously published in a number of Statistical Tables. Consequently, from 28 May 2013, the RBA discontinued the publication of four Statistical Tables: Banks – Consolidated Group Impaired Assets – Table B05; Banks – Consolidated Group Capital – Table B06; Building Societies – Selected Assets and Liabilities – Table B07, and Credit Unions – Selected Assets and Liabilities – Table B08. These discontinued RBA Statistical Tables will continue to be published, but not updated, in ‘Historical Statistics’.
Building society and credit union balance sheet statistics were previously published by the RBA on a monthly basis in Statistical Tables B07 and B08 respectively. In APRA's Quarterly ADI Performance publication, these data are published on a quarterly basis. The data published by APRA cover all building societies and credit unions, whereas data previously published by the RBA only covered larger building societies and credit unions. In addition, the APRA data are published on a consolidated basis, whereas data previously published by the RBA were on a licensed ADI basis.
In addition to the changes described above, the RBA also merged three Statistical Tables – B02, B03, and B04 – and renamed the merged table ‘Banks – On-balance Sheet Assets, Liabilities and Off-balance Sheet Business – Table B02’. Aside from merging these tables, there are no changes to the data series previously published in the separate tables, or the frequency at which are published.
